Come, Take, Learn - Finding Rest For the Soul Hunter Reid / General Adult Talk to them about why i chose this topic • started back in december where i was not content • the passing of John McArthur and Paul washer visiting him and asking “is it well with your soul?” • Hear the fourth verse of “Just as I Am” “4 Just as I am, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve; because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.” Where do you find your comfort and rest? Matthew 11:25–26 ESV At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:29–30 ESV Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” 1. Jesus commands you to come and receive his rest Matthew 11:28 ESV Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. A) Jesus’ call to “come” is a universal command for all to respond to John 7:37 ESV On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. We have the ability to chose where we turn to, and that choice matters Philippians 4:6–7 ESV do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. • This is offered to all mankind • You do not need to clean up your life • Woman at the well • the disciples • woman who was ill • there is no barrier to come to God • Analogy of the two yards with a fence in the middle B) Jesus’ rest is a gift given immediately Exported from Logos Bible Study, 2:34 AM May 24, 2026. 3 • what burden was Jesus giving rest from? • Religious rituals Matthew 23:4 ESV They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. • When Jesu says “all who labor and are heavy laden” refers initially to “those oppressed by the religious legalism imposed on people by the scribes and Pharisees.” • It is said that there were 600 laws for just keeping the Sabath • what is this rest which he offer? • the rest Jesus offers is… • Spiritual relief - from sin and religious oppression • Peace - through right relationship with God • Future rest - from all sin, sorrow, persecution, pain, injustice, and death Exported from Logos Bible Study, 2:34 AM May 24, 2026. 4 2. Jesus commands you to take and learn from him Matthew 11:29 ESV Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. A) The call to take and learn is one of humility • Jesus tells of himself as being gentle and humble in heart • This is not Jesus being powerless, rather shows his strength rooted in submission to God’s will • It takes humility [freedom from pride and arrogance] to pute yourself underneath someone • Supporting verses: 1 Peter 5:6 ESV Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, James 4:6 ESV Exported from Logos Bible Study, 2:34 AM May 24, 2026. 5 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Luke 14:11 ESV For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” B) Jesus’ yoke is a partnership • There are several different reasons why Jesus used the yoke as his metaphor i. When you yoked up two ox’s you would yoke an older trained ox with a younger ox ii. shows that you do not carry the weight by yourself iii. what you submit to • This is the essence of discipleship - bearing the weight of this life with one another • Jesus’ yoke is whole hearted devotion, not keeping a long extensive list of rules • Jesus didn’t abolish the law and profits but he fulfilled it • this taking of the yoke is also transformation from the inside out, which can only happen when the Holy Spirit comes and aAM work a person Exported from Logos Bibledoes Study, 2:34 May 24,in 2026. 6 • this taking of the yoke is also transformation from the inside out, which can only happen when the Holy Spirit comes and does a work in a person • Jesus tells us in “the Great Commission” that he will always be with us to carry the weight Matthew 28:20 ESV teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” 3. Jesus offers a kindly burden Matthew 11:30 ESV For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” A) Our burdens are not effortless • the word used for easy here is ftχρηστό (chrςstos), meaning kind or kindly • this does not represent the same connotation as being free from effort or burden, rather this tells us that it is soē and mild, not harsh or stern or severe • we are able to manage with the help of Christ for he has completed the work for us and bears all for us Exported from Logos Bible Study, 2:34 AM May 24, 2026. 7 Colossians 1:29 ESV For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me. B) The weight decreases , even if circumstances do not • we can not kid, this life is rough and harsh • we deal with sickness, job and family stress, money problems 2 Corinthians 12:9–10 ESV But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. Psalm 94:18–19 ESV When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O Lftχρ, held me up. When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. Exported from Logos Bible Study, 2:34 AM May 24, 2026. 8 Is it well with your soul? three things to remember: a. Christ calls you to come to Him b. Receive what He has to offer and learn from Him c. He bears all things with you (you do not go at it alone) Exported from Logos Bible Study, 2:34 AM May 24, 2026. 9
